Tracking of Progression for Joshua

3/4
Joshua is an avid reader he reads at least 5 books a week, borrowed from the library. He reads a wide variety of books. it seems that almost every book in the children’s section he is familiar with, with the exception of Tamil, Malay , Chinese books. His vocabulary is very good, although his pronounciation of some words are not perfect. He has a problem with recognizing words for example the word “noticed” he would pronounce it without the emphasis of the letter “d”. However Joshua is a very cheerful boy, and very enthusiastic about this program. He asks me questions about certain difficult words and can answer my questions with deep inference. There is room for improvement.

Joshua reads books chosen from the 6-9 yrs old section. So today I urged him to choose a more difficult book. Today we picked a Mr. Mystery book. He reads extremely fast and I am not sure if he is grasping the content knowledge of the book. His vocabulary is also superb, he is able to understand and explain difficult words to be for example “arbitrary”.

In lieu of his incredulous reading speed I offered myself to read for him.  And he has slowed down his reading pace when reading aloud than when reading silently. But he prefers reading silently. As reading aloud makes it hard for him to concentrate as it drowns out his thoughts and concentration. He is one of the better readers in our program. However, often he glosses through the text omitting some words. In the next week I shall commence the flashcard scheme of our program.

Today we played with flashcards the whole session. I made him learn vocabulary through very interesting ways. For example i give him synonyms and he tries to find the word. Otherwise i show him the word and he tries to decipher its meaning by asking me questions. After finding out the meaning i would then ask him to use it in a sentence and also test his spelling. He was able to recognise 6/10 words i think this is already commendable.

Today we continued with our flashcards, with harder words. He remained attentive and listened to my explanation intently. Joshua is attentive and there is much that i can teach him that is if he wants to learn. I believe that these two sessions with the use of flashcard has been beneficial to his English. He remembers the words i have thought and it is comforting to see/ hear that.

Today we did some flashcards and after we were done, we had some fun playing vocabulary games with Lester and Dana. For example we played a game which requires one person to start a word with the last alphabet of the previous word from a common category. It was very fun and we all enjoyed the session.
